Quetzal is a word of Nahuatl origin, associated with Quetzali "Beautiful Brilliant Feather", the Aztecs associated it with Quetzalcoatl and the Mayans with Kukulkan in both the link was with deities related to heaven and earth, that is, the underworld and the supraworld. Their feathers were so valued that only priests and high-ranking rulers wore them.
